Tivoli and Castel Gandolfo

Located in Tivoli, Villa d’Este is a UNESCO’s world heritage site.  It is an excellent example of Renaissance architecture and is famous for its gardens and fountains.

Villa Adriana, also located in Tivoli, is an important cultural and archeological site. It is an exceptional complex of classical buildings created in the 2nd century A.D. by the Roman emperor Hadrian.  It combines the best elements of the architectural heritage of Egypt, Greece and Rome.  It is also a UNESCO world heritage site.

Castel Gandolfo is where the the summer residence  and vacation retreat  for the Pope is located.  Although the palace is within the borders of Castel Gandolfo, it has extraterritorial status as one of the properties of the Holy See and is not under Italian jurisdiction.  Lake Albano, a volcanic crater lake in the Alban Hills of Lazio, can be viewed from Castel Gandolfo.
