Piazza del Campo is the principal public space of the historic center of Siena in Tuscany. Regarded as one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares, it is renowned worldwide for its beauty and architectural integrity. The Palio di Siena, a horse race, is held twice a year around the edges of the piazza.
Florence is the capital of Tuscany. It is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance. The best known site is the domed cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore also known as The Duomo. Other attractions are the Baptistery, Michelangelo’s sculpture of David and the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge). The Palazzo della Signoria is the home of the municipal government.
Also located in Tuscany, Pisa is on the right bank of the mouth of the River Arno on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Pisa is the birthplace of Galileo Galilei. The most famous attraction is the Tower of Pisa, a freestanding bell tower known worldwide for its unintended tilt to one side. The tower’s tilt began during construction caused by inadequate foundation on the ground. The Piazza del Duomo also houses the Cathedral, the Baptistry and the monumental Cemetery.
